Here, Kate tells you how Parent Power can be used to improve things for your children, with the help of your local school......
"I’m dyslexic and so are my children, so I know first hand the difficulties facing parents, children and teachers. My family has been lucky enough to get the specialist support that makes all the difference. I’m campaigning to make sure every school has the expertise to provide its children with that support and the expectation that every child with dyslexia can excel, given that support.
It’s not rocket science or a miracle cure. We’ve known for 30 years what dyslexic children need. Success is about early identification and support from a teacher who has adequate training in dyslexia. It’s about making sure lessons are delivered in a dyslexia friendly way, and that 1:1 or small group support is available and given or overseen by a dyslexia trained teacher.
I hope Xtraordinary People can help and encourage you to continue to push for what your children need, whether you’re a teacher or a parent. Schools have budgets for teacher training and they also have budgets earmarked for for Special Educational Needs. However, we all recognise that there are any number of financial demands on the school budget so it is essential that we all help to ensure that schools spend it where it will make a real difference - providing teachers with the expertise to help these children succeed. Why not ask your school about this?" - Kate Griggs
