BBC Documentary - The Teacher Squad

BBC Documentary The Teacher Squad

Xtraordinary People send in The Teacher Squad to find out why kids are failing - and shows how to put it right.

This BBC documentary reveals simple teaching methods which boost dyslexic and problem school children's reading ages dramatically.

The Teacher Squad (BBC1, 7pm, 13 Dec) features charity Xtraordinary People and its compelling work with dyslexic and other so-called 'problem' school children.

The documentary, filmed in an inner-London school, reveals impressive results:

The average reading age leaps by 2 years in 2 terms.

Some 'problem' children improve by as much as 5 years.

One child up by 3 years in just 13 hours of teaching; another by 2 years in just 9 hours.

The results have potentially positive and wide-reaching implications for society and the future of so-called problem children.

Xtraordinary People calls on Government for specialist teachers in every school.

Kate Griggs was incensed at the way her son's dyslexia was treated, to most people dyslexia means getting your letters back to front.

However for those affected by dyslexia, symptoms can include problems with the times table, a failure to grasp detail or the experience of seeing the words are hopping around a page of text.

Yet people with dyslexia are also good at seeing the big picture, and can be visually creative.

School can be miserable for children with dyslexia if the condition is not diagnosed or if the school does not support them.

They get branded as disruptive with the frustration of trying to learn in spite of their condition and school policy.
